The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia’s journal, The Scribe has been in existence since 1979. In 2009 it became an annually-published peer-reviewed journal.

The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia is seeking submissions for the upcoming issue of The Scribe, to be published in November 2010.

Contributions may include scholarly essays, oral history interviews, commentary, and book and exhibit reviews. All scholarly essays and oral histories should in some way pertain to Jewish life in British Columbia. Comparisons between BC and other localities will also be considered. Commentary and reviews may focus on Jews in BC, on the West Coast (including the western US states), or in Canada generally.

Scholarly essays may fall into the disciplines of history, art or literary criticism, or the social sciences.
Back issues of the Scribe are published on the Jewish Museum & Archives of BC website here.

The preferred length for articles is 5,000 – 10,000 words, but shorter or longer submissions will be considered and reviewed. Proposals should be ready for peer-reviewing, with the author’s name, contact information, and article title on a separate page. A first page of the article should include the title and a 150-word abstract.

Submissions should be sent to the Editor of The Scribe at Scribe Editor

Home Away from Home:

Building Identity and Community at Jewish Summer Camps

March 18 – October 7, 2010

Curated by Michael Schwartz

Since the 1930s, the children of the BC Jewish community have attended Jewish summer camps in BC and elsewhere. They have learned about Jewish history and ethics, the history and politics of Israel, and developed a strong sense of community. When asked about their experiences at camp, alumni often say that their dearest and longest lasting friendships began at the age of seven or eight, in their first days at camp. The exhibit explores such lasting impressions and features an array of photographs, artifacts and interactive displays. Jewish Camps featured in the exhibit include Camp Miriam, Camp Hatikvah, and Camp Solomon Schechter.

About the Curator:
A long-time staff member at Camp Miriam, Michael Schwartz served as Rosh (Executive Director) in 2006 and 2007, and previously as Merkez Chinuch (Programming Director) in 2005. These photographs are available through the Artefacts Canada database, the largest database of museum collections in Canada.

The Leonard Frank Photos studio was located in suite 44-553 Granville Street, and later 614 West Pender Street in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Leonard Frank Photos Studio fonds is one of the largest collections held by the Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia amassing approximately 39,000 photographic images and 2 meters of textual records.

The Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia

Early in 1970, Historian Cyril Leonoff convened with a small group of people to discuss the possibility of starting a Jewish historical society in British Columbia. With assistance from the National Council of Jewish Women and the Canadian Jewish Congress – Pacific Region, this small group of interested individuals founded the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC).

Over the years the Society’s work has included publishing a regular journal, The Scribe, authoring several books, recording oral histories of community members throughout the province, and preserving and making accessible the important photographs and records of the Jewish community. However, in 2002 the JHSBC’s collection was becoming so large and important, that the idea to create a carefully planned integrated museum and archives took hold.

Under the presidency of Bill Gruenthal, the JHSBC Board of Directors gathered a Museum Steering Committee, which included Gary Averbach, Shirley Barnett, Bill Gruenthal, Richard Henriquez, Cyril Leonoff, Irv Nitkin, Rosa Sevy, Ronnie Tessler, Steve Turnbull, Yosef Wosk, and Catherine Youngren.

With the creation of the Steering Committee the plan for the new museum was underway. So began two exciting years of planning and fundraising of over $1.2 million to build the new Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia.

The planning and design work for the new facility was accomplished by Henriquez Partners Architects, interior designer Catherine Youngren, and exhibit designers Aldrich Pears and Associates. The Museum Steering Committee and the Exhibit Review Committee, which included Debby Freiman, Irene Dodek and Richard Menkis, worked tirelessly on the complicated puzzle of planning and building a facility that would capture the public’s interest.

In early 2006 the Board completed the team by hiring museum consultant, Donna Bryman to bring the project to completion. Combined with the dedication and skills of JHSBC Office Manager Marcy Babins, the Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia met its deadline and officially opened on the evening of March 25th, 2007.

The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia administrates the work of the Museum and Archives. For more information on the Jewish Historical Society of BC or the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC, contact 604-257-5199.

As British Columbia looks back on its 150+ year history, the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC celebrates the Jewish community’s full participation in the province’s fascinating history. It also celebrates the ties that bind the Jewish community of British Columbia. The Ties that Bind exhibit highlights this story.

In this exhibit you will meet the men and women who were peddlers, owners of small businesses and large companies, veterans of wars, volunteers in charitable organizations and holders of political office, such as:

• Cecilia Sylvester, a pioneer member of the charitable Hebrew Ladies of Victoria, who entertained Victoria society in her Fort Street home.

• Henry Nathan Jr., Victoria’s Member of Parliament, who was the first Jew to sit in Canada’s House of Commons.

• Hannah Director, who homesteaded with her family in BC’s interior, played violin in Prince Rupert’s symphony orchestra circa 1910 and later hosted Kitsilano’s Show Boat.

• Leonard Frank, a noted Vancouver photographer, came to BC to prospect for gold in 1894. His photography career began after winning a camera in a lottery.

• Louis Gold, a Gastown merchant, who jumped into Burrard Inlet to escape Vancouver’s Great Fire of 1886.

• David Oppenheimer, Vancouver’s second mayor, known as the “Father of Vancouver.” He procured the land for, and officially opened Stanley Park.

• Leopold Levey, who ensured the tiny Jewish community of Trail marked births, bar mitzvahs, weddings and deaths in keeping with Jewish tradition.

Interactive areas in the gallery allow visitors of all ages to learn a little Yiddish, create crafts based on Jewish traditions and share their ideas about Jewish issues that are relevant to all individuals and cultures.
