Hansi Landauer, Otto Landauer's sister, met Erwin while visiting a hospital in Switzerland. Erwin had escaped to Switzerland from Nazi Germany in 1933 with two suitcases of solid gold, and on January 8, 1934, he and Hansi eloped to England and were married in a civil ceremony.
